"How to incorporate meaningful Vastu principles into your home design without compromising on structure, function, or building regulations."
Vastu Shastra is a meaningful part of the design brief for a large proportion of Kerala homeowners. At Thaiparambil Builders, we work with clients to incorporate Vastu principles as a design constraint alongside the structural, regulatory, and functional requirements — not in opposition to them.
The most commonly requested Vastu provisions in Kerala homes are: main entrance facing east or north, master bedroom in the south-west, kitchen in the south-east, puja room in the north-east, and the main water sump not in the south-east or south-west. Most of these can be accommodated in the layout planning stage without structural compromise, provided the site orientation permits it.
The practical challenges arise when the plot orientation conflicts with Vastu requirements — a common situation in urban and semi-urban Kerala where plots are often long and narrow, facing west or south. In these cases, the best approach is to consult a Vastu expert alongside the architect to identify the three or four most important provisions that can be incorporated, and to accept compromise on the less critical elements.
We recommend treating Vastu as a design parameter that informs layout decisions, not as a rigid ruleset that overrides all other considerations. A home that follows Vastu but has a structurally inadequate foundation or a building permit violation is a far greater problem than a home with a slightly compromised Vastu layout and a sound, legal structure.
