Choosing the Right Paint for Your Kerala Home — Inside and Outside

Exterior paint in Kerala faces conditions that would destroy a standard paint system within two or three years: 3,000mm+ of monsoon rainfall, UV radiation levels 30% higher than northern India, surface temperatures that swing between 20°C and 55°C daily, and biological growth — algae, moss, and mould — that thrives in the persistent humidity.

For exterior applications, use only an elastomeric or premium acrylic exterior emulsion with an anti-algae and anti-fungal additive. Brands like Asian Paints Apex Ultima, Berger WeatherCoat Long Last, or Dulux Weathershield Powerflex are formulated for these conditions. Apply over a correctly prepared surface: thoroughly cured plaster (minimum 28 days), one coat of alkali-resistant primer, and two finish coats at the specified wet film thickness.

The primer is as important as the finish coat. Many contractors skip or thin the primer — this is the most common cause of paint failure in Kerala homes. An alkali-resistant primer seals the alkalinity of fresh cement plaster that would otherwise destroy the binder in standard emulsion paints. Never skip this step.

For interior walls, a standard interior emulsion is adequate in living areas and bedrooms. In bathrooms and kitchens, use a moisture-resistant or bathroom-grade emulsion specifically formulated to withstand the combination of moisture, steam, and cleaning agents. In areas with persistent condensation — a common problem in ground-floor rooms adjacent to the soil — a tanking compound applied before painting will address the root cause rather than just masking it with a topcoat.
