Architectural Concept & Construction Execution
A ground-floor retail shell in Alappuzha designed and built for a regional supermarket chain — a high-specification commercial shell with demanding cold storage, fire safety, and logistics provisions.
Retail construction for a supermarket has requirements that differ significantly from standard commercial construction. The structural frame must handle very high floor loads from racked merchandise — we designed for a distributed floor load of 7.5 kN/m², three times the standard residential figure. Column centres were arranged on a 6m × 8m grid to minimise interference with the retail floor plan.
Cold storage provision required a dedicated structural zone with a 200mm insulated floor slab, PUF panel wall and ceiling installation, and a separate refrigeration plant room with mechanical ventilation. A 6-metre clear loading bay at the rear of the building accommodates 20-tonne trucks for daily stock deliveries.
Fire safety installations include a wet riser system, fire hydrant cabinets at 30-metre intervals, an automatic fire detection and alarm system, and a clean agent gas suppression system in the server and cash room. The standby generator — 200 kVA — provides 100% backup for essential systems including cold storage and fire services.
